I had another post in mind for today, but upon reflection have moved that to the back burner. And so, I fully embrace the fun that is Five Minute Friday. I’ve really enjoyed this exercise the past two weeks, so was looking forward to doing it again.
Today’s prompt is: TENDER
Start
Bright blue eyes look up at the soft hazel eyes looking back at her. A face softened not only by age but love.
Tiny fingers find their way to a brightly colored button on a fantastically floral shirt. Even now, her artistic flare shines through.
Age-old hands, wrinkled with time and colored with wisdom caress the tiny face. A mother’s hands never forget.
I stare with tear-filled eyes at this tender scene unfolding before me. And deep in my heart I know it’s a special moment. One to be locked away and pondered in years to come.
This loving woman, who radiates warmth, love, joy and an insatiable appetite for life, art, culture. This woman who invested so much time loving me, and my brother, with tender joy the equal of which I’ve never seen; now looks upon my baby with that same love, warmth, joy, tenderness. Is it possible its even deeper as she looks upon my sweet girl?
I soak in the image before me and lock it away deep in my heart; in that place reserved for the most sacred of memories.
Stop
This post is inspired by the first time my first born met my grandmother. It truly was a tender time. And it still breaks my heart to think she passed away just 4 short months later. I’ll always be so grateful that we “just happened” to be able to be in Arizona at that time for her to meet our little girl. It was the last time our little family saw her living. It’s a sweet, sweet memory.

Hi Jennifer! Visiting from Five Minute Friday.
This post captures such a beautiful memory. I can picture it in my mind’s eye as you so eloquently described it. Mothers and grandmothers are such blessings…this makes me thankful that my grandma is still with me. This was just so sweet!
This is my first time to your blog, glad I found you. I read your “about me”…I also have 2 sweet little girls. 🙂 I hope we have a little boy eventually, too, but we’ll see what God has in store! and…you live in IRELAND?! How completely cool is that!!
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

I’m so sorry to hear that. Praying the memories are sweet!
I can’t believe you ditched a post and wrote this one in its place. Why? Because last night I had a dream about my Grandmother playing with my girls. She has been gone for 4 years now and we all still miss her so much. This post was beautiful and you captured what is in my heart. I’m so glad you made the switch!
Enjoy your weekend (and the fixed boiler)!

Oh wow, Kristen! How crazy!! My grandma’s been gone just over 6 years now and there are days when the missing is just as fresh as the first day. At the time, we had no idea she would be gone so soon.
What a precious moment, and how wonderful you recognized it at the time…that is exactly what I’m praying for right now: That I would be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s prompting in the moments each day. Beautifully written.
